THE SHOW:
Matilda, the now well-known production.
Let’s go back in time for a moment and stop in 1988, when Roald Dahl wrote a remarkable story about a girl of around five years old. This girl, as a baby, already had excellent speech; by the age of three, she had taught herself to read; and by the age of four, she was visiting the public library on her own.
In 2011, we encountered in the West End the wonderful work of Tim Minchin, who adapted Roald Dahl’s story with music and lyrics, creating an outstanding production that won many awards in its very first year.
Somewhere there, we meet as well—on stage.
A girl who is very young, exceptionally gifted, has read many classic books, and has developed telekinetic powers.
Her parents cannot truly see what kind of child they have; they do not raise her well and, of course, do not support her.
Matilda learns on her own how to take care of herself—how to wash, how to eat. We meet her just before she begins school, where the terrifying headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, awaits.
Love, tenderness, support, and teamwork with the other students make Matilda stronger. Her strength supports her classmates too, and together, united as one, they break the rules and stand up against the headmistress.
Good always triumphs over evil.
